Soft set peach & recurrant jam

August 6th, 2009

redcurrentr-&-peach-jam

I do not regliously make jam every year, but this year I been caught by the jamming bug. I came across this more unusual recipe, which is so simple but scrumptious. I’ve Nigella’s How to be a Domestic Goddess to thank for the inspiration, it’s lovely on toast, scones or even just with greek yogurt.

Ingredients:

4 peaches, cut into chunks
Approx 400g redcurrants, remove currants by gently pulling a fork down the stalk
1 kg caster sugar
100ml water
juice of 1/2 a lemon

- Put a couple of saucers in the freezer, to help check the setting point.
- Pop jam jars or preserving jars in oven 140C to sterilise.
- Put all the ingredients into a large pan, warm over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved.
- Then boil for about 15minutes, stirring occassionally to prevent sticking.
- To test if the jam is set,  drop a little onto cooled saucer and gently push with your fingertip, if the jam crinkles slightly then it’s set, if not boil for a further 5 minutes retest and so on.
- Leave the jam for 10 mins or so, until it begins to thicken slightly (this stops all fruit floating to the top). The ladle into jars, cover with waxed paper and lid.

Family day out fishing!

August 6th, 2009

harry-fishingSometimes the simplest things in life are free and the most enjoyable.  One sunny afternoon we set off armed with two fishing nets, our wellies and a picnic, we spent a couple of idyllic hours pottering in the local stream.

We did spot a couple of minnows but caught only pebbles!

helme chase donation SS09Helme Chase is the local Midwife lead Maternity Unit and it’s where our daughter Matilda was born.

Since opening Armstrong Ward, Andrew and I have been overwhelmed by the local support for our shop.  Each year we donate a percentage of the profits from all sales in a our children’s department to a local Children’s charity.  This year we have chosen Helme Chase to support and  have just bought three new fetal heart moniters for the maternity unit.

Country bumpkin gets technical!!

July 16th, 2009

summer berries

I am really a country girl at heart, never happier than when I’m pottering around at home with our children Harry (5 years) and Matilda, (Tilly 20 months)   and secretly have an ambition to one day retire and spend my days making cakes and jam!

But until then family life is a juggling act  of fitting in running our shop Armstrong ward Lifestore, in the lovely Lake Disctrict market town of Kendal, with the day to day round of  children’s birthday parties, swimming lessons, playgroups and PTA meetings. Oh and I nearly forgot to mention the renovation of a 300 year old Westmorland  farmhouse.. which at the moment is more rustic than chic.  So life is hectic but fun!

So on our blog I thought I’d share with you a mixture of our favourite places, shops and resturants, fun family days out, and recipes that we love, along with a sprinkling of news & sneak previews of gorgeous new things for our shop Armstrong Ward Kendal.
